Add An Etched Design To The Glass In Your Front Door

Add some beauty to your front door and increase your privacy by etching the glass pane that is in it. You can easily add a simple design that will provide an opaque view to anyone who approaches.

Use These Items

  • glass cleaner
  • soft cloth
  • self-adhesive vinyl stencil
  • painters tape
  • etching cream
  • glass bowl
  • foam brush
  • thin paintbrush
  • measuring tape
  • squeegee
  • rubber gloves
  • bucket of water
  • sponge

Note: Before purchasing a stencil for the glass, be sure to measure the pane to make sure you buy one that will fit well inside of it.

Clean The Glass And Attach The Stencil

Clean the glass pane with glass cleaner and a soft cloth. Line up the stencil and slowly peel off the backing, pressing down the exposed sections. Continue doing this until the stencil is attached. Smooth out the stencil by running a squeegee across it. Place the squeegee in the center of the design. Press down firmly and move it outwards in all directions. Apply painters tape on the portions of the door that are directly around the glass pane. The tape will prevent the door from being exposed to the etching cream.

Apply The Cream

Put on rubber gloves before applying the cream. It contains hydrofluoric acid, which can irritate your skin. Pour etching cream into a glass bowl so that it will be easy for you to access. Use a foam brush to fill in the stencil. Cover the exposed glass completely and evenly. If there are any small details in the design that you are adding, use a thin paintbrush to apply the cream. The cream will work within a few minutes. To be sure that your design has been added, wait for a little bit longer than necessary before rinsing the cream off.

Rinse The Cream Off

While the stencil is still attached, rinse off the cream. Dip a sponge into a bucket of water and wipe it over the stencil. Rinse the sponge out when it becomes covered with cream. Once all traces of the cream are gone, carefully peel off the stencil. Remove the painters tape and dispose of it, along with all of the other materials that you no longer are using.

Clean the glass once more with glass cleaner and a clean cloth. Once you dry the surface, you will be able to appreciate the beauty of the new design that you have added. It will not fade or peel off as long as you clean the glass with care and do not rub anything abrasive over its surface.

Whether you have just had your glass installed by a company like Tri -County Glass Solutions Of Cambridge Inc or you have had the window for years, this project will make a beautiful addition to your door.
